You Are A Worshipper

It was not a big deal, I thought. It was to be a simple question to the Holy Spirit because I wanted His mind on a business matter.  Is there ever anything but extraordinary with God? He is God. 

The setting for the question was this:  After a number of years as a Social Work professional, the Holy Spirit moved upon me to open a private practice of Clinical Social Work to serve the Christian community’s mental health needs.

In setting up my office one practical need was for business cards. As I experimented with format, design and wording, I paused to prayerfully ask the Holy Spirit:

“What do I call myself?” 

My professional license entitled me a psychotherapist while the Bible would call me a counselor. Two options. I presented them before the Lord with expectancy that He would, of course, select one or the other. Extraordinary God. He answered me and I knew I was hearing the “voice of God” because His was an answer I did not expect. He did not make His choice among my options! His reply was clear however, and resonated in my spirit. He said simply:

“You are a worshiper.”

I am a worshipper. I am a worshipper?

Hmm…. How do I put that on my business card, Lord?

At the time I understood little about what He was saying but in the years following He would bring me to understand that with His reply He had given me His heart as well as His mind on the matter. In so doing He was reordering my understanding, changing my paradigm in order for all of my life to be worship unto Him.

It was true He had called and equipped me to counsel and enabled me to be licensed as a psychotherapist, but His answer refocused me to the “being” as primary to the “doing”. While my question was role and task oriented, worship is not primarily about what you – or I -- do, it is first about who you are. He had answered me in relational terms, of being, which is of the heart and the basis of relationship. His heart was that I would serve others from a life of worshipful relationship with Him. You see, what one does flows out of who one is. He was conveying that in order for all of life to be worship unto Him, the tasks one performs must flow forth from relationship with Him.

As His worshipper you are a living expression of worship unto the Father as was Jesus. Your every thought, word, and deed is to be an expression of reverence, devotion and adoration unto Him.
